Frequently Asked Questions

Does your system work on the Windows Vista Operating System?

Yes, Digitech and its team of engineers has evaluated Beta and Release versions of the new Microsoft Windows Vista operating system and our testing validates the  access control and security platform.

Do I really need an alarm system? I've never had a break-in, so why would I need a security system for my self storage facility now?

There are several good reasons to consider adding security tools for any business, especially self-storage. Your new security system is an investment, not an expense.

• Storage tenants expect you to help protect their storables.
• With a security system, you may be able to outshine your competition.
• Insurance underwriters and bankers pay attention to such details.
• You, your employees, and your customers will feel more secure.
• Over the years, owners have proven to themselves that what we say is true: More Security = More Rentals = More Profit.

We know Digitech International, Inc. has quality systems, but are they affordable for my business?

You decide how much security it will take to satisfy your needs and make your tenants comfortable. With Digitech International, Inc. you can define the scope of security you find desirable. We can scale the system to meet your budget requirements, and your system can easily grow as your business grows. In addition, in apples-to-apples comparisons, Digitech International, Inc. almost always comes out ahead.

What happens if I want to turn my computer off at night, or if my computer goes down for some reason?

The DigiGate-700™ Access Control System operates from its own System Controller. That means the system takes input from your computer only when there is an information update. The System Controller then operates the access control system until the next update. Your computer does not have to be on for the security system to be operating.

What kind of gate should I use?

• Aesthetics come first for many owners. Ornamental gates can contribute to your overall curb appeal.
• Space restrictions sometimes dictate the type operator that is appropriate. A pivot-type gate fits where others do not.
• The motor-driven mechanisms that move gates are known as Gate Operators. The different types of operators have varying characteristics. The demands of handling the traffic for self-storage require commercial grade equipment. Some of the practical considerations include frequency of operation, cycles-per-day calculations, and available safety features. Low-cost residential systems are available, but generally do not hold up in the storage application.

I’m concerned about putting electronic equipment outside in our kind of weather. How well will your keypads hold up?

Digitech International, Inc. components are designed to withstand any harsh environment. The all-metal keypad faceplate makes a huge difference. The keypad has no plastic or rubber parts to deteriorate. There are no springs that weaken over time or exposed switch contacts to corrode and cause the keypad to stop working. Ask current Digitech International, Inc. system owners what they like best about their system. They’re likely to tell you it’s the durability of the keypads. Similarly, other components are designed with the environment in mind.

How does the system know to lock out delinquents?

Automatic lockout of unpaid tenants is one of the major strengths of the DigiGate-700™ Access Control System. As you perform day-to-day operations in your favorite management software program, the approved status information transfers automatically to the gate control system, regardless of which management software package you choose. For smaller stores that operate without the benefit of specific management software, status updates for “paid” and “unpaid” tenants are easily made in the DigiGate-700™ program.

We’re convinced that we should use individual unit door alarms, but should we choose hard-wired or wireless?

For installation in new construction, most owners think they can flip a coin to choose one or the other. In reality, if it is properly installed, either will give years of reliable property protection. The real advantage in using the DigiGuard™ Wireless Alarms is ease and speed of installation. You can be offering space for rent much more quickly. For installation in existing facilities, hard-wired systems prove to be expensive and difficult. The DigiGuard™ Wireless Alarms install easily in both newly constructed buildings and in existing facilities. DigiGuard™ makes retrofitting alarms affordable.

I see a push button on your Keypad. What does the button do?

Almost all Digitech International, Inc. keypads come to you ready to provide communication from the keypad location to your office. One of the options, DigiCall™, integrates those messages right to your telephone. The other option is a standard pushbutton intercom. Either way, the two-way communication is built into your Digitech International, Inc. keypads, not some simple bolted on plastic box. Digitech International, Inc. intercom equipment stands up to the elements. Providing an easy method for your tenants to communicate with you while they visit is one more way you can give great customer service. The call button on the keypad makes it easy.

We want to buy a competitor’s store down the block. Can we run them both from one location?

No matter what you call them—remote stores, satellite sites, or unmanned facilities—operating multiple locations from a centralized office or headquarters makes a lot of sense to many owners. Connecting the locations can be accomplished in a variety of ways. Traditionally, making the connection through a modem provides the interaction to operate a remote access and alarm system. More recently, owners have wanted to add surveillance capabilities with remotely viewed video. Using a high-speed computer connection, like a DSL line or a cable modem, makes that possible in many locations. Other short-distance applications have included radio-transmitted signals to move the control data back and forth. If it makes sense for good operations and customer service to have a remote store, we can probably make it happen technically.

What is a safety loop?

A coil of wire buried in your driveway on each side of the gate provides a safety control sensor for the operation of the gate. Sensing circuits connected to the gate motor help control the action of the gate to keep it from closing on objects, like a vehicle that is in the gate area. For new construction, pre-formed loops are suggested, because they can be buried with no saw cutting of new asphalt or concrete.
